On Glassware

It took an evening of public humiliation to be converted. The scene was a wine tasting in a beautiful private home. I was a young pup -- barely squeaking beyond the legal drinking age. Rare wines were served and included in the mix was a bottle of Chateau Lynch Bages. An award winning Bordeaux from the area of Pauillac. I was young, brazen, and candid and vocal in my opinion. I disliked this wine tremendously. I told the entire group why I thought the wine was poorly made and completely out of balance.

A short time later another wine was served -- in a different glass -- bigger bowl, finer crystal and more elegant. I fell in love with this wine. "Forward fruit, integrated tannins, beautiful finish." It was then -- immediately after my gushing remarks that the host revealed that I was drinking the same wine. Chateau Lynch Bages.

Stemware can make all the difference in enhancing your enjoyment wine. Different colors and shapes can add much to the wine drinking experience. Look for a glass with a generous bowl, a thin rim and an ample stem, though don't overlook more casual glasses such as juice-style or trattoria glasses for more casual affairs. Clean your stemware in very hot water without soap as residue can impart nasty and unwanted flavors.
